Nuvola Player 3

Linux cloud music player Nuvola Player 3 finally goes stable. Its official repository is ready for Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and derivatives.

Nuvola Player 3 supports various services such as Google Play Music, 8tracks, Amazon Cloud Player, Bandcamp, Deezer, Jango, KEXP Live Stream, Logitech Media Server, Mixcloud, Plex Music, Spotify, TuneIn, Yandex Music.

The new release has been rewritten from scratch and contains plenty of improvements over Nuvola Player 2. It features:

  • built on top of WebKit2Gtk+ so it doesn’t need any hacks to support Flash plugin
  • run multiple services side-by-side, the software creates a desktop application shortcut when a particular service starts
  • official repositories for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora.
  • GTK header bar, client-side-decorations in Gnome.

How to Install Nuvola Player 3 in Ubuntu:

Open terminal from Unity Dash, Application Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, run below command one by one.

1. Add the official repository.

Paste below command in terminal and hit run:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb https://tiliado.eu/nuvolaplayer/repository/deb/ wily stable" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tiliado-nuvolaplayer.list'

Type in your password (no visual feedback so just type in mind) when it asks and hit enter.

Here you may replace wily in the code with:

  • wily — for Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf
  • vivid — for Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet
  • trusty — for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Linux Mint 17.x, Elementary OS Freya, etc.

2. Add GPG key to trust the repository packages.

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 40554B8FA5FE6F6A

3. Finally install Nuvola Player 3 via either Synaptic Package Manager after clicking Refresh, or below commands one by one:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer3

Nuvola Player is an open-source music player that integrates cloud music services like Google Music, Rdio, Spotify, Grooveshark, Jango, etc with your desktop.

How to Install Nuvola 3 in Ubuntu:

NOTE: Nuvola Player 3 won’t replace Nuvola Player 2 in you system. You can keep using Nuvola Player 2 until Nuvola Player 3 is stable enough for you.

1. Add Nuvola Player stable repository.

Open terminal from the Dash or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run command to create and edit a repository file:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nuvola-player.list

When the file opens, paste below into it (For Ubuntu 14.10, replace trusty with utopic) and save the file:

deb https://tiliado.eu/nuvolaplayer/repository/deb/ trusty stable

2. The official website does not mention the repository gpg key. But sudo apt-get update command outputs below error:

W: GPG error: https://tiliado.eu trusty InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 40554B8FA5FE6F6A

This can be easily fixed by running below command to receive the key:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 40554B8FA5FE6F6A

3. Finally search and install Nuvola player 3 via Synaptic Package Manager. Or run below two commands one by one in terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer3

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+T or search & open terminal from the Unity Dash.

2. (64bit systems only – amd64 architecture) When the terminal opens, run the command to enable multiarch:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

3. Run command to add the Nuvola Player stable repository for Ubuntu. So for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivatives are supported.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nuvola-player-builders/stable

Type in your user password when it asks and hit Enter to continue.

4. After that, you have to refresh the system package cache:

sudo apt-get update

5. For the flash plugin as well as dependencies, you have to install system updates:

sudo apt-get ugprade

6. Finally install the player via your package manager or just run the command:

sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer

  • Disabled test suite failing under Fedora’s mock tool.
  • Added a work-around to get rid of ABOUT protocol source missing dialog.
  • Fixed a memory leak in Media Player Remote Interface and optimized metadata property.
  • Added support for Amazon Music Prime streaming.
  • Updated translations.

Install Nuvola 2.4.1 in Ubuntu:

This player is available in the developer’s PPA for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 12.04 and their derivatives.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run below command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nuvola-player-builders/stable

After that, update and install the player as well as the flash support:

Nuvola cloud music player gets a new release days ago. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 12.04, Linux Mint and other derivatives.

As you may know, Nuvola Player is a desktop app that integrates Google Music, Bandcamp, Deezer, Grooveshark, Hype Machine, 8tracks, Pandora, Rdio and Amazon Cloud Player. Version 2.3.1 was release on March 09, 2014 with following fixes:

  • Google Play settings are applied settings instantly.
  • Fixed occasional JavaScript crashes. (Closes: LP:1263705)
  • Google Play: Remove broken feature Hide Google+ buttons. The developer have given up fixing.
  • Google Play: fixed pause action (Closes: LP:1282346)
  • Imported translations.

Install Nuvola Player:

Ubuntu, Linux Mint and their derivatives can easily install this player from the developer’s PPA. Just press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nuvola-player-builders/stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer

Nuvola Player, app that integrates Google Music, Bandcamp, Deezer, Grooveshark, Hype Machine, 8tracks, Pandora, Rdio and Amazon Cloud Player with Linux desktop recently released version 2.3.0.

As you may know, the developer has announced that Nuvola Player is discontinued until a new developer is found or a funding goal ($59.00 per week) for the current maintainer is reached. Now, the developer receives $60 per week and Nuvola Player seems to be active again!

What’s New in Nuvola Player 2.3.0:

Service updates manager, which can be used to download and install updates of service integrations providing hot fixes for breakages caused by sudden changes in a web interface of streaming services. Purpose of these updated is to provide these fixes faster without waiting for new Nuvola Player release.

Detection of Flash plugin and GStreamer issues has been improved with links to the new help site. JavaScript API was given methods to check format support and version was increased to 2.2.

Google Play 4.4: fixed sandbox pattern to enable Flash object for playback.

Added donation bar.

Updated VAPI files and added libnotify.vapi from Vala 0.22.1 tarball to fix build error.
Google Play 4.5: Fix next/previous action broken by a recent web app update.

How to Install Nuvola Player 2.2 in Ubuntu 13.10

Nuvola is a cloud music integration for your Linux desktop. It supports Google Play Music, Amazon Cloud Player, 8tracks, Grooveshark, Hype Machine, Pandora, Rido.

Although the maintainer has discontinued the development of this project, it’s still available for Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and their derivatives on its PPA.

To get started, press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run command below to add the unstable PPA which works great on my laptop.

Then update system package lists:

sudo apt-get update

Install the cloud player as well as the flash plugin:

sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer nuvolaplayer-flashplugin

New features in Nuvola 2.2:

Nuvola now supports Bandcamp. Bandcamp is an online music store, as well as a platform for artist promotion, that caters mainly to independent artists. Artists on Bandcamp have a customizable microsite with the albums they upload. All tracks can be played for free on the website and some artists offer free music downloads.

Nuvola Player supports scrobling to Libre.fm, a free Last.fm alternative.

Last.fm love and ban actions are available from the main menu (control), tray icon and Unity quick list.

Some services allow you to download songs, but file downloads were not supported by Nuvola Player. File downloads have been enabled and a simple downloads manager has been created to address this issue.

Other changes:

The Cloud Based Nuvola Music Player has reached 2.1.0. It brings new features for users as well as for service maintainers and many bug fixes.
