Inkscape 1.3 Released! How to Install in Ubuntu 23.04 | 22.04

Inkscape, the popular free open source vector graphics editor, announced the 1.3 stable release few days ago! Here’s how to install it in all current Ubuntu releases.

Inkscape 1.3 features include:

  • New shade builder tool (shortcut X), with ability to select multiple overlapping shapes and create new shapes.
  • New ‘Document Resources’ dialog from File menu.
  • New Font filter and collection editor.
  • New pattern editor to adjust pattern parameters
  • Ability to set opacity and blend mode in the Layers and Objects dialog
  • Redesigned Live Path Effects dialog
  • PDF import dialog overhauled.

How to Install Inkscape 1.3 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 23.04, and Linux Mint 21, there’s an official PPA contains the new release package.

1.) Add the Inkscape PPA

Firstly, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the command below and run to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable

Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it asks for sudo authentication, and hit Enter to continue

2.) Install / Upgrade Inkscape

And finally install Inkscape 1.3 via command:

sudo apt install inkscape

Linux Mint needs to run sudo apt update manually, though it’s done automatically in Ubuntu.

After installation, enjoy the new software release by searching for and launching from the Activities overview screen.

How to Uninstall:

If you want to remove Inkscape 1.3 and restore the package to the stock version in your Ubuntu repository, run the command below to purge PPA and downgrade Inkscape:

sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:inkscape.dev/stable

If you just want to remove the image editor, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:

sudo apt remove --autoremove inkscape

For the Ubuntu PPA, either remove the source line using “Software & Updates” utility under Other Software tab:

or run the command below in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:inkscape.dev/stable
