Liferea Feed Reader

Liferea (Linux Feed Reader) 1.12.7 was released a day ago. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.04.

Though it’s been 8 months since the last release, Liferea 1.12.7 is a small release with a few bug-fixes:

  • Fix crash when selecting empty nodes.
  • Fix out-dated documentation on Firefox live bookmarks
  • Fix headline large images/videos or images with margins causing horizontal scrolling in headline view

How to Install Liferea 1.12.7 in Ubuntu:

The ppa repository contains the latest Liferea packages for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.04, and derivatives.

1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcut or by searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Type user password (no asterisk feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then upgrade Liferea via Software Updater utility:

or run commands one by one to install the Linux feed reader:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install liferea

Finally launch the news reader from your application launcher and enjoy!

Uninstall Liferea:

As the PPA also contains many other software packages, you may remove it by launching Software & Updates and navigating to Other Software tab.

If you want to remove the Liferea news reader software, either use your system package manager or run command in terminal:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove liferea liferea-data

A new bug-fix release for Liferea 1.12 series was released today. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 16.04, and derivatives.

This is a bugfix release. It includes an important bug fix that solves a possible endless loop on using “Next Unread” which several users experienced as endless high CPU usage. If you are affected by this: please upgrade!

This release also switches the keyring integration from GnomeKeyring to libsecret and introduces a flatpak JSON.

For Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Linux Mint 19, 18.x, the new release is available in the unofficial PPA repository.

A new bug-fix release for Liferea 1.12 was released earlier today. A plugin installer plugin was introduced that allows easy discovery and installation of 3rd party plugins.

Full changes in Liferea 1.12.2 include:

  • Adding a plugin installer plugin that allows discovering and automatically installing 3rd party plugins
  • Drop language from user agent to increase privacy
  • Add transmission-gtk and aria2 as download tool options
  • New command line option --disable-plugins (-p) to start with all plugins disabled.
  • Fix that Liferea not showing up in GNOME Software
  • Correctly print error message when failing to unlock GNOME keyring
  • Fix that CSS style for GTK link colors not used

The open-source Liferea feed reader finally reached the new stable 1.12.0 release after months of development. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 18.04.

Liferea 1.12.0 release highlights:

  • HTML view now has a ‘View Image’ context menu

How to Install Liferea 1.12.0 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 16.04 and higher, you can easily install the new release from this PPA repository.

The first release candidate for the new stable Liferea 1.12 (Linux Feed Reader) has been released. The new series of the open-source news aggregator now switches to WebKit2.

Main changes since Liferea 1.10 series:

  • Switch to Webkit2
  • Support for Do-Not-Track
  • Improved trayicon plugin
  • Support for Reedah and InoReader.
  • Support for categories in TheOldReader
  • Simplified handling of external browsers

In addition, the RC release adds support for downloading content that cannot be displayed by HTML widget (e.g., PDFs), shows new items count in tray icon and minimize to system tray (Gnome Classic) on window close, there are also some bug fixes and translation updates.

How to install Liferea 1.12 rc1 in Ubuntu:

Liferea does not provide pre-compiled Linux binaries, however, there are a few unofficial Ubuntu PPAs contain the most recent Liferea packages. And below is how to install Liferea 1.12 rc1 in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, or Linux Mint 17, 18 using my personal PPA:

1. Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Type in password (no visual feedback, so just type in mind and hit Enter) when it asks and hit Enter.

2. Then launch Software Updater and you’ll be able to upgrade Liferea news aggregator after checking for updates:

Or just run command to install or upgrade to Liferea 1.12 rc1:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install liferea

How to Restore:

To downgrade to the stock version of Liferea in Ubuntu main repository, purge the PPA via ppa-purge:

sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below one by one:

Liferea, Linux Feed Reader has just released a new version 1.10.5 with a few bug fixes. Let’s see what’s new and how to install / upgrade it in Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and Linux Mint.

As you may know, Liferea is a news aggregator for GNOME desktop that aims to be fast, easy to use, and easy to install. It supports the major feed formats including RSS/RDF and Atom and can import and export subscription lists in OPML format.

Liferea 1.10.5 brings below bug fixes:

  • Fixed Honor preferences when opening links
  • Fixed missing installation of liferea.convert file
  • Fixed Redhat popup notification only for new items

I’ve updated this build into Launchpad PPA, so we can just run below commands one by one in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) to install/upgrade it in Ubuntu:
