HPLIP 3.14.1 Released with Security Fixes, Install it in Ubuntu

HPLIP, an HP-developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux now is at version 3.14.1. This release mainly fixed two security fixes and added digital signature validation in upgrade feature.

As you may know, HPLIP is free, open source software distributed under the MIT, BSD, and GPL license. provides printing support for 2,295 printer models, including Deskjet, Officejet, Photosmart, PSC (Print Scan Copy), Business Inkjet, LaserJet, Edgeline MFP, and LaserJet MFP. (Note: Not all models are currently supported. See Supported Printers for more information.)

HPLIP 3.14.1 fixed below issues:

  • CVE-2013-6427: hplip: insecure auto update feature
  • CVE-2013-6402: hplip: insecure temporary file handling in pkit.py

Download & Install HPLIP:

1. Download the .run file from sourceforge page.

2. Right-click on the file and go to its Properties window, under Permissions tab check the box “Allow executing file as program”

allow hpip executable

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens run below command to start the installer:

./Downloads/hplip-3.14.1.run

Answer the questions and you’ll finally get the latest version of HPLIP installed on your system.

HPLIP 3.13.11 released, Install it in Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian

HPLIP, HP Linux Imaging and Printing released v3.13.11 with many new HP printers and Debian 7.2/6.0.8 support. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Linux Mint.

As you may know, HPLIP is an HP developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux. The HPLIP project provides printing support for over 2,080 printer models–including; Deskjet, Officejet, Photosmart, PSC (Print, Scan, Copy), Business Inkjet, LaserJet, Edgeline MFP, and LaserJet MFP.

The latest v3.13.11 added support for the following new printers:

  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MPF M176 series
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MPF M176n
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MPF M177 series

Also added supported for Debian 7.2, Debian 6.0.8, and added Pin Printing support for HP LaserJet m5035 MFP device.

Install HPLIP:

The .run installer is available in sourceforge.net. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run:

wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hplip/hplip-3.13.11.run

Then give executable permission:

chmod +x hplip-3.13.11.run

Finally start the installing process and follow the prompts. It will automatically install this tool and configure your connected HP printers.

sh hplip-3.13.11.run

Download & Install HP Linux Printer Driver

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run below command to download hplip 3.13.9:

cd ~/Downloads && wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hplip/hplip-3.13.9.run

Or you can check out the latest version on this page.

Once downloaded, execute command to start the installation:

sh ~/Downloads/hplip*.run

Answer the questions and wait for the installing process. It’ll properly install & configure the driver for your printer. When done, you can open the HP device manager from the panel indicator. Enjoy!
